Understanding The 5 Main Types of Electrical Wires And Cables

Over the years, many people have asked me about different cable models, materials, and their applications — both at work and in daily life. To help provide a clearer and more systematic understanding of the wire and cable industry, I’ve organized and supplemented the classification of wires and cables based on industry references as well as my own working experience, hoping it can serve as a useful reference for discussion and learning.

Generally speaking, wire and cable products with smaller diameters and simpler structures are called wires, while those with larger diameters and more complex structures are called cables.

However, there is no strict distinction between the two, and in many cases the naming depends on common usage. There are a great variety of wire and cable products, currently with more than one thousand types. According to similarities in performance, structure, manufacturing process, and application characteristics, they can generally be divided into the following 5 categories:

  1. Bare Wires and Bare Conductive Products

Bare wires and bare conductive products refer to wire and cable products that have conductors but no insulation.

They are used in:

l  power transmission,

l  electrical engineering,

l  communication,

l  electrical equipment components.

Compared with other wire and cable products, they have the advantages of simple structure, convenient manufacturing, easy installation, and easy maintenance.

The materials used for this type of product are mainly metals and their alloys.

  1. Winding Wires (Magnet Wires)

Winding wire refers to wire products that generate induced current by cutting magnetic field lines in the form of windings, or generate magnetic fields through electric current. They are used in:

l  coils of motors,

l  transformers,

l  electrical equipment.

They mainly include enamelled wire and wrapped wire. In addition to metals, these products also use various insulating varnishes, insulating films, insulating fibers, and other materials.

  1. Power Cables

Power cables are wire and cable products used in the main lines of power systems to transmit and distribute large amounts of electrical energy.

They are used in power transmission and distribution lines, usually with operating voltages of 1kV and above.

This is one of the most representative categories of cable products. Their structures generally consist of five parts: conductive core, insulation layer, protective layer, shielding layer, and filler.

These products require very high-quality insulation materials, especially for ultra-high voltage cables above 35kV.

Well-known companies in this field include Belden, Far East Cable, Jiangnan Cable, and Hengtong Cable.

  1. Communication Cables and Optical Cables

Communication cables and optical cables refer to wire and cable products used to transmit telephone, telegraph, television, broadcasting, fax, data, and other information.

Communication cables can be divided into symmetrical communication cables and coaxial communication cables.

These products require wires and cables to transmit various kinds of information to the receiver at extremely high speed, accurately and clearly. Therefore, they require conductor materials with very high conductivity, insulation materials with high insulation resistance and low dielectric constant, as well as materials with excellent shielding performance.

Optical cables are cable products that use optical fibers as the transmission medium for optical signals. They have the advantages of low transmission loss, wide transmission bandwidth, immunity to electromagnetic interference, good confidentiality, light weight, and small outer diameter. Therefore, optical cables developed rapidly once they were introduced.

  1. Electrical Equipment Wires and Cables

Electrical equipment wires and cables include wire and cable products that directly deliver electrical energy from the distribution point of the power system to electrical equipment and appliances, as well as various wires and cables used in measurement, signal control systems, and electrical equipment interiors.

This is the most widely used category, with the largest variety of products and the most complex manufacturing technologies, and it is also the field I work in the most.

According to product applications, it can be divided into 8 categories, including

l  low-voltage distribution wires and cables,

l  signal and control cables,

l  instrument and equipment connection wires,

l  transportation vehicle wires and cables,

l  geological resource exploration and mining cables,

l  DC high-voltage cables,

l  heating cables,

l  special wires and cables.

Because these wires and cables are used in complex environments, the requirements for sheath materials vary greatly, including heat resistance, flame resistance, oil resistance, corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, flexibility, and other properties. Therefore, a wide variety of materials with different performances are used.

In Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces of China, there are many small and medium-sized enterprises producing electrical equipment wires and cables. Compared with the market for large power cable projects, which is dominated by giants such as Far East Cable, Shangshang Cable, and Hengtong Cable, the market for electrical equipment wires and cables—especially low-voltage wires, electronic wires, and sheathed cables—is supported by numerous small and medium-sized enterprises, such as Swell Cables, where I have worked for many years.

In conclusion, wires and cables play a very important role in the national economy. They play a decisive role in power systems and information transmission, and the development of motors, telecommunications, and the electronics industry are all greatly influenced by them.

In modern production, national defense, scientific research, and daily life, wires and cables are indispensable products. The role that wires and cables play in the national economy is like the role of blood vessels and nerves in the human body.
